Summer Reading

Summer Reading Courses

About

Summer Reading Courses (SRC) allow you to complete your coursework without being tied to a classroom. While all courses use Blackboard, no two courses are necessarily the same. One course may consist of reading the required books and writing papers about the material, while another may require minimal writing, but frequent online coursework. The course content is up to the professor, and it is important that you meet with your professor or read through the course syllabus prior to enrolling so that you know what will be expected of you.

With a wide variety of courses, there's something offered in SRC that you need. All this, conveniently available to you without setting foot on campus over the summer.

Please note:

  • You may take only two SRC courses in one summer.
  • SRC classes do not qualify as resident credit, and do not count toward the requirement that at least 30 of the last 36 hours of credit needed for a degree must be registered for and completed in residence.
  • SRC hours do not apply toward full-time enrollment status for financial aid purposes.

Flexibility and Convenience

SRC courses are not taken in a classroom, and can be completed from virtually anywhere. This is especially useful for students that won’t be living in Lincoln over the summer. Students can study abroad, travel, or work from anywhere, all while earning UNL credits with Summer Reading Courses. However, SRC courses are also great for students who will be living in Lincoln throughout the summer, but need a little extra flexibility.

Many of the students that take SRC courses work full or part time in Lincoln, or want to add more credit hours to their campus-based schedule.

Choose the classes that interest you most (review with your academic adviser before making your final selections)

Courses

We offer a variety of courses from which you can select. You should consult your academic adviser in your home college or department to determine if the course will meet the requirements of your degree. Our academic adviser is available to assist you with any questions you have regarding SRC courses.

All Summer Reading Courses (SRC) courses require students to use Blackboard. The assignment feature within Blackboard will be the primary means of submission for most instructors. Some prefer that you use e-mail. You'll also use Blackboard or e-mail to post questions to your instructor or other students and gain feedback during your course

      5. Contact the UNL Help Desk at 402-472-3970, 1-866-472-3970 or helpdesk@unl.edu. Visit the Help Desk online for useful tips and hours.

      6. No, Summer Reading Courses do not apply toward full or part-time status for financial aid purposes. Student status can affect your eligibility for scholarships and financial aid. Call the Scholarships and Financial Aid office at 402-472-2030 for clarification.

      9. No, University policy states that for all UNL undergraduate degrees, 30 of the final 36 hours must be completed in residence (i.e., in the classroom, on campus in Lincoln). This means that only six of your final 36 hours for an undergraduate degree can be either Summer Reading and/or Open Enrollment courses. To seek a waiver of this policy, contact your respective college dean’s office.

      10. UNL Summer reading Courses are enrolled through the office of Extended Education & Outreach and, therefore, they will not show up on your schedule in MyRed until a grade is reported to the Records Office by August 1.
